Mauricio Mesa proposes an almost endless list of possible restaurants where to go to enjoy a good meal. A good handful of suggestions and all of them to take into consideration. This is his particular gastronomic journey through the province of Malaga.

Breakfast at Restaurante del Club Cerrado del Águila

Mauricio’s bet to start the day off right takes us to Mijas. Specifically to the restaurant of the Cerrado del Águila Club, where he likes to savor a good coffee while enjoying its tranquility and excellent views.

Having an aperitif at Entre Limones

This is, as he describes it, a beautiful restaurant located on Marbella’s promenade, “perfect for a snack”. Among its extensive menu, he suggests its Russian salad, acorn-fed Iberian ham, smoked sardine loin and scallops marinated with lime. If the diner’s option is to extend the time he takes advantage of for a more serious meal, aim for the grilled meats and fish, his leg of suckling lamb or an exquisite grilled octopus

Lunch at Casa Navarra and Los Marinos de José

His proposal is centered around the product itself, with a cooking style that respects its quality. “The fried dishes are exceptional—red mullet, anchovies, baby squid—as well as the scaled fish and seafood,” he adds. And all of it can be enjoyed alongside an excellent wine selection.

Another culinary landmark featured in this edition of Dónde Comer is Casa Navarra, a classic grill house with over 30 years of history, offering Basque-Navarrese cuisine where grilled meat takes center stage. As an example, he highlights their outstanding ox T-bone steak. He also appreciates their traditional spoon dishes, such as pochas with clams, vegetable stew, Navarre asparagus, piquillo peppers, and fish.

Having drinks at El Patio, Marbella Club

For Mauricio, it’s the ideal spot to spend the afternoon and enjoy a good conversation in a refined and carefully curated setting.

Dinner at Escollera and Sake Izakaya

To put the finishing touch on the day, the CEO of Cordia in Spain takes us to Estepona and downtown Málaga. First up is La Escollera, a family-run restaurant located right in the harbor, featuring a spacious dining room and a pleasant terrace with sea views. He recommends their fried dishes, coquinas (small clams), grilled fish, and seafood.

Next is Sake Izakaya, “an authentic Japanese tavern where you can try dishes that go beyond sushi and sashimi.” He mentions stews like the nitsuke of meagre, as well as their mushroom and marinated fish dishes, which are always a delight. He encourages guests to let themselves be guided by the restaurant’s daily specials.
